Noob Guide to Installing Cyanogenmod on HTC Incredible 2

by OmegaIT — Categories: AndroidComments Off

The intent of this article is to help someone install the Cyanogenmod ROM on their HTC Incredible 2.  There are a few different procedures, but nowhere did I find a simple “how to” on how to do them all, so hopefully this helps my fellow noobs…

Equipment Used:

HTC Indredible 2, with HBOOT version 0.98 running Android 2.3.4.  This phone was locked, I don’t believe these procedures will worked with an unlocked phone.

Laptop running Windows 7 64-bit.

Download Software:

  1. Download needed software to C:\HTCInc2
  2. Download HTC Drivers
  3. Download HBOOT downgrade
  4. Download Cyanogenmod
  5. Download Google Apps

Backup Your HTC Incredible 2

Ensure you backup any data, music, movies, etc… on your phone.  These procedures will wipe the phone and you will lose any data you may have saved.  Also, do this at your own risk!  These procedures come with NO GUARANTEE, and Omega IT Solutions disclaim any chance of damage to your phone.  These procedures will also void any warranty you have with your phone.

Downgrade HTC Inc 2 HBOOT to ver. 0.97

If your HTC Incredible 2 is running with an HBOOT version of 0.98, you have to downgrade it to version 0.97.  To see what version of HBOOT you are running, shutdown your phone, then power on the phone while holding the volume down button.  The HBOOT version will be displayed near the top of the screen.  Downgrading the HBOOT will factory wipe your phone.  If your HBOOT version is 0.97, then skip down to the “Gaining S-OFF and Installing a Custom Recovery Image” section.

Downgrading to HBOOT ver. 0.97

  1. Install the HTCDriver3.0.0.007 drivers by running C:\HTCInc2\HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe
  2. Disable or remove all phone, PDA, MP3 sync softwares, including HTC Sync.
  3. Put phone in charge only mode. Settings > Connect to PC > Default connection type > Charge only
  4. Enable USB debugging mode: Settings > Applications >Development> USB debugging
  5. Disable fastboot: Settings > Power > uncheck Fast Boot
  6. Extract the vwhk-12102011-c.zip file you downloaded.
  7. Connect HTC Incredible 2 to your PC.
  8. Open a Command Prompt As Administrator, and run the C:\HTCInc2\vwhk-12102011-c\hack-vivow.cmd
  9. After the process completed I had a factory wiped phone. To verify that my HBOOT was downgraded, I disconnected the phone from the PC, pulled the battery, then powered on the phone while holding down the Volume down button. The HBOOT showed that it was version 0.97.

Gaining S-OFF and Installing a Custom Recovery Image

WARNING: Gaining S-OFF access on the HTC Incredible 2 will void the warranty.

  1. If you did not have to downgrade your HBOOT version, install the HTCDriver3.0.0.007 drivers by running C:\HTCInc2\HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe
  2. Go to http://revolutionary.io
  3. Write down your phone’s serial number – you will need to enter this in Revolutionary’s form.
  4. Download and extract the Revolutionary 0.4pre4. I downloaded it to C:\HTCInc2\revolutionary-0.4pre4
  5. Fill out the form on the Revolutionary site to get a beta key. I copied the key and pasted it in Notepad.
  6. Disable Fast Boot again: Settings > Power > uncheck Fast Boot
  7. Enable USB debugging again: Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging.
  8. Connect the HTC Incredible 2 to the PC via USB
  9. Run revolutionary.exe.
  10. Enter the beta key – this is why I copied it from the website to Notepad. You can easily copy it from Notepad and paste it in the command window. Open the file menu, click on Edit, then Paste. Press Enter.
  11. Revolutionary will run, and do its thing. Be patient…
  12. Revolutionary will ask if you want to download Clockwork Recovery, I said yes. When complete, Revolutionary closed on the PC.
  13. Highlight BOOTLOADER, and select it.
  14. Highlight RECOVERY, and select it to verify that it Went into Recovery – Revolutionary CWM.
  15. Select Reboot System.
